Alaskans for Cannabis Therapeutics
Alaskans for Cannabis Therapeutics (ACT) submitted a petition for legalization of medicinal cannabis in the fall of 1997. This was a culmination of years of effort, education, and activism.
During that period Americans for Medical Rights (AMR) offered neither assistance, nor guidance in the drafting of petition.
ACT only learned of AMR's existence through a telephone call from past Alaska state representative David Finkelstein, who arranged with AMR to contact ACT.
After much delay AMR contacted ACT stating they had read and rejected the contents of the ACT petition. Bill Zimmerman, AMR representative suggested we join them with a boiler plate initiative they had generated, for nationwide submission to all the states.
AMR failed to respond to numerous requests for information about their organization and their medical Cannabis measure.
ACT has been informed that AMR is a California-based organization that
receives support and funds from George Soros.
AMR communications with ACT have been rude and at times unusual, to
the point of AMR accusing ACT of sending "cryptic" messages to them.
Other medical Cannabis groups to include Colorado and DC have reported
similar results when attempting to work with AMR on the medical marijuana
issue.
If this boiler plate initiative approach continues it may cause grave
harm to a realistic approach of cannabis for medical purposes.
